August 25- TOC member Charlie Ochipa will give a brief talk
about mounting orchids followed by a hands-on lesson. Each member will
receive and mount their own C. walkeriana var. coerulea hybrid. Any
leftover plants may be purchased for $5. There will be a member’s plant
sale.
September 22- AOS Judge Ryan Kowalczyk of Ursa Orchids (and TOC
member) will be giving a Power Point presentation on Catasetinae. Breeding
trends, how to repot, and culture will all be discussed.
October 27- Today mini and compact growing cattleyas come in
many colors and shapes. Learn about the small growing cattleya species, the
important breeding plants and what hybrids are available for the orchid
enthusiast. The ‘best practices’ for growing these little gems concludes
the program. This is a Power Point presentation by AOS Judge Fred Clarke of
Sunset Valley Orchids (CA).
October 30, 31, & November 1-
Don’t forget our “Orchid Expo” Show & Sale at
USF Botanical Gardens.
November 24- We will be caravanning to three different member’s
homes to see how they grow orchids. From growing under the trees, to
greenhouse growing, to growing in a Wardian Case, there will be lots of
ideas to take home to your own growing area. (There will be no meeting this
month.)
December 8- The Christmas Party starts at 11 A.M. and everyone
who brings a gift gets a gift! Remember to bring a covered dish.
January 26- Resolve to have a problem free year! TOC member
and AOS Judge Jim Clarkson will give a Power Point presentation on
identifying and combating pests and diseases in your growing area. There
will be a member’s plant sale.
February 23- Want to know how to squeeze more orchids into your
growing area? Grow miniatures! AOS Judge Linda Wilhelm of Woodland Orchids
(NC) will show you how to grow these “Living Gems” with a Power Point
presentation.
March
13- Mark your calendars now for TOC’s 4th Annual
Orchid Auction at USF Botanical Gardens. It’s a fun filled day with Bill
Thoms as auctioneer!
March 23- This year our field trip will be to the Tampa
areas newest orchid grower, June's Orchid Estate in Thonotosassa. There will be a
morning of shopping for quality orchids followed by lunch on the covered
patio. (There is no meeting this month.)
April 27- TOC’s annual meeting, “Potting and Picnicking”,
is held under the tent at USF Botanical Gardens. Members will get a
hands-on repotting lesson. A tour of the orchid greenhouse will be followed
by a picnic lunch. There will be a member’s plant sale.
May 25- The annual Installation of Officers and Spring Party
starts at 11 A.M. All members will receive a gift orchid and should
remember to bring a covered dish.
June 22- AOS Judge Phillip Hamilton grew up with broughtonias
and cattleytonias. He will share with us how they grow and how to grow
them.
