    Tampa Orchid Club 2009 - 2010 Schedule

August 25- TOC member Charlie Ochipa will give a brief talk about mounting orchids followed by a hands-on lesson.  Each member will receive and mount their own C. walkeriana var. coerulea hybrid.  Any leftover plants may be purchased for $5.  There will be a member’s plant sale.

September 22- AOS Judge Ryan Kowalczyk of Ursa Orchids (and TOC member) will be giving a Power Point presentation on Catasetinae.  Breeding trends, how to repot, and culture will all be discussed.

October 27- Today mini and compact growing cattleyas come in many colors and shapes.  Learn about the small growing cattleya species, the important breeding plants and what hybrids are available for the orchid enthusiast.  The ‘best practices’ for growing these little gems concludes the program.  This is a Power Point presentation by AOS Judge Fred Clarke of Sunset Valley Orchids (CA).

October 30, 31, & November 1- Don’t forget our “Orchid Expo” Show & Sale at USF Botanical Gardens.

November 24- We will be caravanning to three different member’s homes to see how they grow orchids.  From growing under the trees, to greenhouse growing, to growing in a Wardian Case, there will be lots of ideas to take home to your own growing area.  (There will be no meeting this month.)

December 8- The Christmas Party starts at 11 A.M. and everyone who brings a gift gets a gift! Remember to bring a covered dish.

January 26- Resolve to have a problem free year!  TOC member and AOS Judge Jim Clarkson will give a Power Point presentation on identifying and combating pests and diseases in your growing area. There will be a member’s plant sale.

February 23- Want to know how to squeeze more orchids into your growing area?  Grow miniatures!  AOS Judge Linda Wilhelm of Woodland Orchids (NC) will show you how to grow these “Living Gems” with a Power Point presentation.

March 13- Mark your calendars now for TOC’s 4th Annual Orchid Auction at USF Botanical Gardens.  It’s a fun filled day with Bill Thoms as auctioneer!

March 23- This year our field trip will be to the Tampa areas newest orchid grower, June's Orchid Estate in Thonotosassa.  There will be a morning of shopping for quality orchids followed by lunch on the covered patio.  (There is no meeting this month.)

April 27-     TOC’s annual meeting, “Potting and Picnicking”, is held under the tent at USF Botanical Gardens.  Members will get a hands-on repotting lesson.  A tour of the orchid greenhouse will be followed by a picnic lunch.  There will be a member’s plant sale.

May 25- The annual Installation of Officers and Spring Party starts at 11 A.M.  All members will receive a gift orchid and should remember to bring a covered dish.

June 22-   AOS Judge Phillip Hamilton grew up with broughtonias and cattleytonias.  He will share with us how they grow and how to grow them.
