Ridge Round-Up 2009 Tampa Orchid Club made quite a showing in Lakeland at the Ridge Orchid Society’s 47th Annual Orchid Show. The event took place September 18-20th.thThe theme for the show was Orchid Fantasy. The name of our 10x10 foot display, “Through the Looking Glass” was the brainchild of our own Jim Clarkson. Laurie Nissen, Robin Saunders and Dolores Smith hauled the tables, ladders, drapes and dolly from the shed. Sue Barnum was in charge of the many potted palms needed to fill in the show space. Emily and Jim Clarkson brought backdrop plants, a beautiful gold frame, as well as a mountain of orchids. The first order of business was to unload, unload, unload! Glen Gary pointed out our assigned work space and everyone got involved. While Emily and Jim Clarkson dug into the necessary paperwork, the rest of the team started hustling. Laurie and Sue were the creative genius behind the display. They had a plan in mind to create a beautiful orchid oasis. Members had loaned so many gorgeous orchids for the show that it was difficult to decide which plants would make the cut. Mostly, it seemed to come down to flow, which ones ‘fit’ the best. Robin jumped right in helping to sort and label the plants that would go into the exhibit. Bill Thoms and Dolores were surprised to find an ugly black toad and slithering little snake while cleaning up the ‘show rocks’ that are normally stored in the Club’s shed. As the work progressed, the gold frame was placed in the display, turned at an angle, with some strange and unusual Bulbophyllums spilling through it. Off to the side a delightful Cheshire cat grinned in approval. (We won’t even mention the lively debate THIS produced!) Finally, the display was complete. Absolutely astounding!! Apparently the judges thought so, too. It was incredible to see the display COVERED in awards after the judging. Downright embarrassing. (Picture a great big Cheshire Cat grin!) TOC received a 2nd place ribbon and $75 dollars in addition to the coveted AOS Trophy for best display! Individual members received a total of 28 ribbons and 10 trophies. Thank-you to everyone who helped make this success possible. What a great show!
