Robin Saunders and her Blc Toshie Aoki 'Pizzaz' AM/AOS which won both the Judges' Choice and Members Choice Ridge Round-Up Tampa Orchid Club made quite a showing in Lakeland at the Ridge Orchid Society’s 47th Annual Orchid Show. The event took place September 18-20th.thThe theme for the show was Orchid Fantasy. The name of our 10x10 foot display, “Through the Looking Glass” was the brainchild of our own Jim Clarkson. Laurie Nissen, Robin Saunders and Dolores Smith hauled the tables, ladders, drapes and dolly from the shed. Sue Barnum was in charge of the many potted palms needed to fill in the show space. Emily and Jim Clarkson brought backdrop plants, a beautiful gold frame, as well as a mountain of orchids. The first order of business was to unload, unload, unload! Glen Gary pointed out our assigned work space and everyone got involved. While Emily and Jim Clarkson dug into the necessary paperwork, the rest of the team started hustling. Laurie and Sue were the creative genius behind the display. They had a plan in mind to create a beautiful orchid oasis. Members had loaned so many gorgeous orchids for the show that it was difficult to decide which plants would make the cut. Mostly, it seemed to come down to flow, which ones ‘fit’ the best. Robin jumped right in helping to sort and label the plants that would go into the exhibit. Bill Thoms and Dolores were surprised to find an ugly black toad and slithering little snake while cleaning up the ‘show rocks’ that are normally stored in the Club’s shed. As the work progressed, the gold frame was placed in the display, turned at an angle, with some strange and unusual Bulbophyllums spilling through it. Off to the side a delightful Cheshire cat grinned in approval. (We won’t even mention the lively debate THIS produced!) Finally, the display was complete. Absolutely astounding!! Apparently the judges thought so, too. It was incredible to see the display COVERED in awards after the judging. Downright embarrassing. (Picture a great big Cheshire Cat grin!) TOC received a 2nd place ribbon and $75 dollars in addition to the coveted AOS Trophy for best display! Individual members received a total of 28 ribbons and 10 trophies. Thank-you to everyone who helped make this success possible. What a great show!

TOC Annual Orchid Auction This year's Annual Auction went off without a hitch. The weather was picture perfect, a true Chamber of Commerce day. The final outcome was our best ever. Pictured below are photos from the set-up, the auction itself and the presentation of a check to the USF Botanical Gardens of a portion of our profits.
Ryan Kowalczyk Continues Winning Streak With Three More AOS Awards TOC member Ryan Kowalczyk seems almost unstoppable in his quest to garner AOS awards. In January Ryan won an FCC on one of his Paphiopedilum crosses and in February he earned another another three awards, an FCC and two AMs. As you can see from the photos below, they were all very well deserved. Congratulations ! Ryan Kowalczyk Starts the New Year Off Right TOC member Ryan Kowalczyk started the New Year off the way some growers and hybridizer only dream of, by earning an FCC from the AOS for one of his own crosses. His cross, pictured below was made by crossing Paphiopedilum Hsinying Web with Paphiopedilum concolor. The results proved to be wonderful, not what one would readily expect from the cross, a dark vinicolor maudiae type Paph that is a sequential bloomer. I can't wait to see the real thing.
TOC Has Moved to a New Location The move will last for an undetermined amount of time and we will let you know when we are allowed to move back into our regular meeting space. The Address of our new, temporary meeting place will be: The Ragan Center 1200 E. Lake Ave. Tampa, Florida
